Summary

Progress and future trends in this field. Structure of the C60 and C70 fullerenes. Initially envisaged as rather unreactive, aromatic-like molecules, the fullerenes, in fact, undergo a wide variety of reactions characteristic of alkenes. The many derivatives of C60 and the few of C70, that have now been reported offer new directions for organic chemistry. The difficulties associated with the purification of fullerenes may stimulate the development of analytical and separation techniques, to the lasting benefit of all chemistry. J.V.
