Summary

A wide range of cooling and heat pump devices, based on caloric effects, provide an alternative to vapour compression technology. To increase the cooling and heating power density of state-of-the-art devices, new heat transfer design principles are being investigated, in particular the integration of so-called thermal control elements (TCEs) and thermal control circuits (TCCs). Here we report on a novel open-source tool for numerical modelling of TCEs and TCCs, the TCCbuilder. The tool allows virtual device components to be created as material assemblies, as well as to be connected in circuits to obtain TCCs embodied in a caloric device, and analysed. We present an exemplary analysis of ferrofluidic thermal switch that was integrated in a magnetocaloric device and theoretically evaluated with TCCbuilder in terms of temperature span and COP.
