Summary

New regulations and trends on energy and sustainability are requiring the closure of traditionally open vertical refrigerated display cabinets, as a proven solution for significant energy saving. By the use of CFD simulations it is possible to focus on each incoming energy source and numerically validate solutions prior to their verification on test rooms. Numeric analyses thus allow to understand the physical mechanisms of energy transport and quantify them both in standard conditions and “in field” use. In this paper are first analyzed two design variants related to door opening mechanism, where CFD has been used in order to quantify the incoming energy during opening procedure. It follows the presentation of simulation results related to a whole closed cabinet, together with the analysis of energy contributions on total heat extraction rate, both in standard condition and in a simulation of real use (where energy consumptions are strongly related to the opening frequency).
