Characterization of graphite-salt blocks in chemical heat pumps.

Summary

Porous graphite blocks impregnated with calcium chloride were manufactured following IMPEX patent and the material aspects of these blocks were investigated. Expanded graphite powders were prepared by heating expandable graphite powders intercalated with sulfuric acid. Porous graphite matrices were formed by pressing expanded graphite powders. IMPEX blocks were completed by immersing graphite matrices in salt solution under vacuum, followed by vacuum drying. Uniform distribution of salt was confirmed and the porosities and average radii of IMPEX blocks were examined as a function of bulk density and weight fraction of graphite. Dimensional stability of IMPEX block could be achieved in reaction with ammonia gas.
