Summary

THIS PAPER PRESENTS A REVIEW OF SOME OF THE ANTICIPATED PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE FROST HEAVE OF AN ARCTIC CHILLED GAS PIPELINE. THE DISCUSSIONS OF PIPELINE DESIGN IN VARIOUS LOCATIONS INCLUDE UNFROZEN GROUND, BERM, SHALLOW PERMAFROST, FROZEN-UNFROZEN INTERFACES AND RIVER CROSSINGS. THE DISCUSSIONS ARE SUPPORTED BY NUMERICAL RESULTS FROM A TWO-DIMENSIONAL FINITE DIFFERENCE HEAT CONDUCTION-CONVECTION MODEL, INCLUDING GRADUAL PHASE CHANGE.
