Summary

ELECTRICAL POTENTIALS GENERATED DURING THE FREEZING OF PURE WATER AND MOIST SOILS HAVE BEEN MEASURED IN THE LABORATORY. THE FREEZING POTENTIAL IN WATER WAS ICE-POSITIVE AND OF THE ORDER OF A FEW VOLTS ; THE POTENTIALS IN SOILS WERE OF THE ORDER OF A FEW HUNDRED MILLIVOLTS AND THE SIGN CHANGED WITH TIME UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF SURFACE CHARGES ON THE MINERAL PARTICLES.
