According to China's official data, '97 production of air conditioners totaled 8.5 million units. '98 production is said to have topped 9 million units. Similarly, domestic shipments are said to have topped 7 million units in '98. If this is true, it means that the Chinese market has become comparable in size to the Japanese market.
