Summary

A description is given of developments in the perishable food market, in which the conventional trains have been found to be more and more inadequate. In 1988, the SNCF (the French railroad network) introduced "Chronofroid", a combined railroad-road transportation system which utilizes C-class refrigerated swap bodies (20 to -30 deg C), ensures collection through terminal road servers, and provides railroad transport between terminal locations by special direct fast trains. An efficient marketing and management system completes the service. Chronofroid activity is experiencing a continuous growth and will soon be used for international transport. J.L.
