CO2 as a refrigerant: what can we expect now?
Number: 0005
Author(s) : GIROTTO S.
Summary
After the discovery of environmental issues caused by synthetic refrigerants (destruction of the ozone layer and greenhouse effect), and due to increasing environmental awareness, the interest in natural refrigerants (ammonia, HC and CO2) sprung up. CO2 as a refrigerant was rediscovered quite recently, approximately 20 years ago, after a time where it had been completely abandoned. The first sectors to employ CO2 were commercial refrigeration and heat pumps for hot water. Its use is spreading to other sectors and to larger systems. There is a clear trend toward using CO2 refrigeration systems also for logistic platforms, process chillers and large heat pumps. CO2 is being introduced in comfort cooling as well. Some issues still exist - such as the size of components available and the efficiency limits when operating at high ambient temperature, but the path toward use of CO2 as a common and safe refrigerant is clear.
