CO2 expanding process for CO2 transcritical cycle.

Author(s) : ZHA S., MA Y.

Summary

The isentropic and isenthalpic expansion processes in a CO2 transcritical cycle were analysed thermodynamically. It was found that the effective refrigeration capacity of the cycle using an isentropic expansion process is higher than the cycle with isenthalpic expansion process. The increment is slightly larger than the expansion work recovered because of the transcritical cycle. Further analysis and comparison were made for two decreasing throttling loss methods: using an internal heat exchanger and using an expander instead of throttling valve. The results indicate that using a high efficiency expander in the transcritical cycle is the better method. In comparison with conventional cycles, the advantages of the expander in CO2 transcritical cycles were illustrated. In addition, the CO2 expander working conditions were thermodynamically analysed and the design phase change process was determined.
