The development of a CO2 expander in CO2 transcritical cycles.

Author(s) : ZHA S., MA Y., SUN X.

Summary

Developing a CO2 expander to replace the throttling valve in CO2 transcritical cycles is a good way to improve the efficiency of the cycle. In this paper, many types of CO2 expanders were compared in terms of the properties of the CO2 expanding process. The rolling piston expander was selected due to its suitable capacity, low cost, simple construction and relatively high efficiency. According to the CO2 transcritical water-to-water heat pump experimental system and the design system operation condition, the construction parameters of the rolling piston expander prototype were determined. The two types of inlet control systems-mechanical controlling system and electromagnetism controlling system were analysed and compared. The mechanical control system was chosen in the rolling piston expander due to its reliability and simplicity. The efficiency was analysed and loss analysis results obtained with the CO2 expander prototype were provided.
