Summary

The paper covers the evolution of various CO2 system designs that have been used in supermarkets/s in Northern Europe. The main objective is to make a comparative analysis of different systems, highlighting strengths and weaknesses of the systems built in Northern Europe. The most common designs (cascade, transcritical single-stage, transcritical cascade and transcritical booster systems) are discussed. The analysis is iIIustrated by practical experience acquired when using the various types of systems. Discussion on the application of the Nordic experience to other countries and types of supermarket is launched.
