Cold storage of loquat cultivars.

Summary
The objective of this study was to examine the keeping quality of a new clone of loquat cv. Akko 1, which is known to possess a low storage potential. The new clone Avri bears larger fruit of superior appearance in comparison with Akko 1. A factorial trial comparing the two cultivars at two storage temperatures (0 and 4 °C), with and without high density polyethylene (HDPE) wraps, was conducted with fruit harvested on the same day from the orchard where the clone had been discovered and developed. The fruit was stored for three weeks and examined upon removal from storage and following three days' shelf life at 20 °C. The two clones could be differentiated at harvest on the basis of size and colour, but they did not differ in the other parameters measured (fruit firmness, total soluble solids, acidity and taste). Satisfactory fruit quality of both cultivars was maintained during 3 weeks' storage at 0 °C plus 3 days at 20 °C, 80% still being marketable. HDPE wraps reduced weight loss significantly and thereby improved fruit appearance somewhat. Slight fruit deterioration was associated mainly with physiological peel disorders and losses due to decay were minor. Storage at 4 °C resulted in fruit of satisfactory quality, only when it was HDPE-wrapped. Without wraps, weight loss was excessive and resulted in obvious shrivelling. The taste and appearance of wrapped fruit of both cultivars, stored for 3 weeks at either temperature, were still acceptable after 3 days' shelf life.
