Summary

The evaporation of water at low pressures is usually restricted by low heat transfer coefficients. Thus, heat transfer enhancing structures such as fins or porous coatings are used in evaporators of adsorptions heat pumps. In this work, macroscopic fin structures, micro porous coatings and the combination of both are systematically investigated. These structures provide capillary action to wet the heat exchanger surface with a thin water film. As the water film exhibits high heat transfer coefficients, the evaporation performance is strongly dependent on the water level. To investigate this dependency all measurements are performed at continuously varied filling levels. Furthermore, the influence of evaporation temperature and heat flow is studied. Results show high improvements of the evaporation performance for thermally coated tubes reaching similar heat transfer coefficients as falling film evaporators. Thus, the presented high performance heat exchanger structures allow new evaporator designs for powerful adsorptions heat pumps.
