COMPARATIVE TESTING OF A THIN-WALL VEHICLE.

Summary

TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT ON THE TRANSPORT OF FROZEN FOODS IN MECHANICALLY REFRIGERATED VEHICLES WITH DIFFERENT THERMAL CHARACTERISTICS, VARYING PALLET PATTERNS. VEHICLES, OF DIFFERENT INTERNAL WIDTH, WERE LOADED WITH MODULAR LOTS GIVING VARIOUS TYPES OF STOWAGE. THE RESULTS SHOWED THAT THIN-WALL VEHICLES ARE SUITABLE FOR THE SAME DUTIES AS THOSE WITH CONVENTIONAL INSULATION IF SOME GIVEN PRECAUTIONS ARE TAKEN. PALLETISATION AND MECHANICAL HANDLING ARE EFFECTIVE FOR REDUCING LOADING AND UNLOADING TIMES AND TEMPERATURE RISE DURING THESE PROCESSES. IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO PROVIDE FULLY CONDITIONED LOADING AREAS OR SPECIAL PROTECTIVE MEASURES IF THE CARGO IS TRANSFERRED FROM A PROPERLY COOLED ROOM TO A NON-PRECOOLED VEHICLE WITHIN A LOADING TIME OF 1 MIN PER PALLET (30 MIN PER VEHICLE).
