Comparison of magnetic field sources for magnetic refrigeration at room temperature.

Author(s) : ROUDAUT J., YONNET J. P., KEDOUS-LEBOUC A., et al.

Summary

Efficient design of the magnetic field source is one of the keys to building competitive magnetic refrigeration systems. In this paper the authors define a set of performance criteria representative of magnetic field source efficiency, namely magnetic coefficient of performance, cost per unit of cooling power, specific power density, volumetric power density and maximum forces or torque. They studied six published magnet structures using finite element software and compared them relative to these criteria. The performances of the structures for each criterion were explained and the results allow the selection of a specific design depending on the scope of application.
