Summary

This MCE alloy was prepared by the arc-melt method. Based on the step-scanned high resolution powder X-ray diffraction data, the crystal structure of this alloy has been determined with the help of Rietveld refinement. the structure analysis indicates the T-T bond connecting Gd5T4 (T: Si, Ge, Sn) in this alloy is a little longer comparing with that of the Gd5Si2Ge2 alloy. Temperature dependent XRD indicates that Gd(5)Si(1.8)Ge(1.8)Sn(0.4) performs monoclinic-orthorhombic structural transition accompanying the magnetic transition near curie temperature. It is believed the first order magnetic-crystallographic transition could be triggered easily and the large magnetocaloric effect at a low magnetic field change is obtained in this alloy with Gd5Si2Ge2-type crystal structure.
