Concentration of mineral constituents in apples cv. Gloster and some factors determining their quality.

Author(s) : BEN J., SAYED M. M. el

Summary

Dependence between the mineral composition of "Gloster" apples harvested in 11 commercial plantations and their susceptibility to bitter pit and internal breakdown was investigated in a 3-year trial. Concentration of mineral constituents was determined in apples 2-3 weeks before harvest. Fruit were harvested at full harvest maturity and stored in a cold store for 150-165 days. After the storage the incidence of bitter pit and internal breakdown was assessed. The content of Ca in apples was a more reliable determinant of their susceptibility to internal breakdown than the K/Ca ratio.
