Summary

MORPHOLOGICAL RESPONSES OF A UNICELLULAR ALGA TO FREEZING WERE OBSERVED USING A CRYOGENIC LIGHT MICROSCOPE. THE SAMPLE WAS RAPIDLY FREEZE-FIXED FOR SUBSEQUENT OBSERVATION IN A CRYOGENIC SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPE. THE POTENTIAL OF THIS DUAL OBSERVATION TECHNIQUE IN STUDIES OF CELLULAR RESPONSE TO ENVIRONMENTAL STRESS IS DISCUSSED.
