Summary

In 1998, French law made it compulsory to perform annual control of circuits containing over 2 kg of refrigerant and also made leak repair compulsory. The sensitivity of leak detectors used to control tightness remained to be defined. Sensitivity has now been defined: the Decree dated January 12, 2000 published in this article specifies sensitivity. Knowledge of this equipment is continually being enhanced and regulations will probably lead to expansion of this market. Several types of equipment are available, some comply with the new regulations and others do not. Qualification of leak detectors is thus required. Several organizations, are working on qualification; the Energy Centre (Centre d'Energétique) of the Ecole des Mines de Paris is particularly active in this field.
