Summary

The dual temperature storage regime developed for Sungold plums enables the export of these plums from Israel to Europe, at the desired stage of colour and firmness. However, the fruit generally needs to be sold within a month of harvest, since it has fruit softening as a limiting factor. A study was conducted to extend the export season by applying controlled atmosphere (CA) storage at 0 °C, following the initial storage period at 7 °C, to decelerate the rate of fruit softening. Compared with storage in air, 3 weeks of CA (2% O2 + 5% CO2) storage resulted in firmer fruits without internal browning after 6 weeks (inclusive of 12 days of simulated transport in air at 0°C) and 4 days of shelf life, without any significant change in colour.
