Summary

The scab-resistant apple cultivar Florina suffers rapid loss of firmnes when cool stored under normal atmospheric conditions. A trial with ULO (Ultra Low Oxigen) controlled atmosphere conditions showed that its physical, chemical and sensory properties are kept satisfactorily till end of April. The atmospheric CO2 content of 2 or 3% neither influences fruit quality nor causes physiological disorders; however, a low oxigen content is recommended so as to avoid loss of firmness. Unfortunately, these conditions were shown to partially inhibit the development of fruit flavour.
