Controlled-atmosphere storage technology in the 1990's.

Author(s) : JAMESON J.

Type of article: Article

Summary

Following a brief review of the development of controlled-atmosphere storage in the United Kingdom, the author details gas composition figures for Cox's Orange Pippin and Bramley's Seedling. Modern store design and control technology has improved the post storage condition of Cox's. However, Bramley's Seedling is prone to scald and ethylene scrubbing in addition to CO2 and O2 control is desirable. Research is in progress to devise control systems which monitor fruit response to the imposed store atmosphere, and increasing public concern over the use of fungicides and pesticides will accelerate the use of storage techniques which are not dependent on chemical treatment.
