Summary

On behalf of the German Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has implemented projects at Chinese and Indian manufacturers of air conditioners within the framework of the International Climate Initiative. The GIZ programme Proklima implemented these projects and based on the progress so far, this study presents an overview of the costs and greenhouse gas emissions reduction cost-effectiveness of using various alternative refrigerants in Article-5-countries. The study identifies all of the areas where cost implications exist for the introduction of R290 and compares them with the cost for existing R22 or new R410A developments. In addition, the lifetime emissions of such air conditioners are approximated and based on this, the costeffectiveness of emissions reductions is estimated.
