Summary

A study investigated whether absorption refrigerating machines could compete with compression refrigerating machines in the temperature range 90 to 120 deg C. The article gives the basic principles for calculating the refrigeration requirement, with particular reference to office buildings. A chapter is also devoted to the energy requirement of buildings. The advantages of absorption refrigeration over compression refrigeration lie in the macro-economic and the environmental field. Very favourable effects are obtained when the absorption refrigerating plant forms part of a heat-and-power plant. The conclusion is that the feasibility of absorption refrigeration depends on several factors. It is important to know how high the price of heat would need to be in order to compete with compression refrigeration and how long it would take for the plant to pay for itself.
