Summary

SKIN TEMPERATURES WERE TAKEN AT A DISTANCE OF 5 MM FROM THE EDGE OF THE CRYOPROBE. NUMEROUS SITES WERE FROZEN FOR THREE MINUTES OVER A RANGE OF TEMPERATURES FROM 273 TO 213 K (0 DEG C TO -60 DEG C). AFTER THREE DAYS SKIN WAS TAKEN FROM THE SITES FOR HISTOLOGICAL EXAMINATION. ALL SPECIMENS WITHIN THE RANGE 273 TO 263 K AND SOME DOWN TO 238 K (-35 DEG C) WERE VIABLE. NECROTIC TISSUE WAS FROM 259 TO 223 K (-14 DEG TO -50 DEG C) AND ALL BELOW 223 K. THE RESULTS INDICATE THE NECESSITY FOR TEMPERATURES BELOW 223 K FOR CRYOSURGICAL TREATMENT OF CANCER. C.R.F.
