CRYOELECTRICITY.

Author(s) : SABRIE J. L.

Type of article: Article

Summary

THE ARTICLE DISCUSSES THE ADVANTAGES AND DRAWBACKS OF SUPERCONDUCTORS COMPARED WITH COPPER CONDUCTORS. THE NORMAL APPLICATIONS OF CRYOELECTRICITY ARE REVIEWED: HIGH-ENERGY PARTICLE PHYSICS; USE OF PRIMARY ENERGY SOURCES; MEDICAL INSTRUMENTATION; POWER GENERATION, TRANSMISSION AND DISTRIBUTION; INDUSTRY AND DEFENSE. THE INNOVATIONS MADE POSSIBLE BY THE DEVELOPMENT OF SUPERCONDUCTORS OPERATING AT POWER FREQUENCIES ARE DESCRIBED. COMPARED TO CONVENTIONAL DEVICES WITH SIMILAR FUNCTIONS, SUCH SYSTEMS SHOULD OFFER AT LEAST ONE OF THE FOLLOWING ADVANTAGES: LIGHTNESS, COMPACTNESS, EXTREMELY LOW LOSS, LOWER VIBRATION AND SHOTE RSPNSTMS. THE ARTICLE CONCLUDES BY LOOKING AT THE WORLD MARKET FOR CRYOELECTRICITY AND ASSESSING THE FRENCH INDUSTRY'S POTENTIAL MEDIUM-TERM SHARE IN THIS MARKET.
