THE PURPOSE OF THIS BRIEF PAPER IS TO DEFINE THE FUNDAMENTAL DIFFERENCES, IN TERMS OF METHODS AND TECHNOLOGY BETWEEN THE < CONVENTIONAL > INDUSTRIAL CRYOGENIC SECTOR COVERING THE TEMPERATURE RANGE FROM 173 TO 63 K (-100 TO -210 DEG C) AND THE < DEEP COLD > SECTOR DOWN TO ABSOLUTE ZERO. IT IS BEYOND THE SCOPE OF THIS PAPER TO DRAW UP AN EXHAUSTIVE LIST OF ALL MEANS AVAILABLE FOR PRODUCING LOW TEMPERATURES, EVEN IF LIMITED TO METHODS ACTUALLY IN PRACTICAL USE. THE A. LIMITS TO ACTUAL INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS, AND IS NOT CONCERNED WITH HISTORICAL ASPECTS.
