CRYOGENICS FOR SUPERCONDUCTING COMPUTERS.

Author(s) : GUERNSEY R. W.

Summary

SUPERCONDUCTING COMPUTERS ARE STILL IN THE RESEARCH STAGE, BUT IT IS NOT TOO EARLY TO CONSIDER THEIR REFRIGERATION REQUIREMENTS. A PROCESSOR HAVING ROUGHLY FIFTY TIMES THE COMPUTING POWER OF THE CURRENT LARGEST IBM MACHINE MIGHT DISSIPATE 10 W AT 4.2 K. A MINIPROCESSOR MIGHT NEED ONLY 25 MW OF REFRIGERATION. PRESENTLY AVAILABLE CRYOCOOLERS HAVE RELIABILITY AND COST ACCEPTABLE FOR A LARGE SYSTEM APPLICATION (1 TO 10 W), ALTHOUGH ONE WOULD LIKE TO SEE FURTHER IMPROVEMENT. LOW COST CRYOCOOLERS FOR SMALL SYSTEMS ARE THE GREATER CHALLENGE. THIS PAPER REPORTS ON IBM'S CURRENT LABORATORY EERIENCE WITH CHIP COOLING AND 4 K REFRIGERATION AND DESCRIBES COMPUTER CRYOGENIC SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS AS ANTICIPATED AT THIS TIME.
