INDIA IS THE LARGEST SHRIMP PRODUCING COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. IT RANKS 7TH IN THE ORDER OF FISH PRODUCING COUNTRIES AND 12TH AMONGST FISH EXPORTING COUNTRIES. THE ANNUAL FISH PRODUCTION IS ABOUT 2.5 MILLION TONNES AND ACCOUNTS FOR 3.3% OF THE WORLD'S PRODUCTION. WITH THE DECLARATION OF EXCLUSIVE ECONOMIC ZONE AS 200 NAUTICAL MILES, A VAST AREA ABOUT 2 MILLION LAKH SQ KM HAS COME UNDER GOVERNMENT JURISDICTION WHICH CONSTITUTES 4.5 MILLION TONNES POTENTIAL FOR FISH HARVESTING. IN ADDITION INDIA HAS 4 MILLION TONNES POTENTIAL OF FISH HARVESTING IN THE INLAND SECTOR.
