CRYOMEDICINE.

Author(s) : SUMIDA S.

Summary

IN 1949, B. LUYET COOLED THIN FILMS OF BLOOD AT AN ULTRA-RAPID RATE IN LIQUID NITROGEN FOR INDEFINITE PERIODS. NEW POSSIBILITIES WERE OPENED UP BY THE DEMONSTRATION THAT GLYCEROL PROTECTED AVIAN SPERMATOZOA. IN 1950, C. POLGE DISCOVERED GLYCEROL AS A CRYOPROTECTANT WITH A. U. SMITH, FOLLOWED BY A DISCOVERY OF DMSO BY J. LOVELOCK. IN JAPAN, THERE WERE FEW PATIENTS WHO CONTRACTED HEPATITIS AFTER THE TRANSFUSION OF FROZEN BLOOD. THIS NEW BLOOD PRODUCT IS A UNIQUE SUPPORT FOR MALIGNANT TUMOR PATIENTS. FROZEN AUTOLOGOUS BONE MARROW TRANSPLANTATION HAS RESCUED THE LETHALLY MYELOSUPPRESSED MARROW OF CANCER PATIENTS. FROZEN SEMEN AND OVA ARE POPULAR NOT ONLY IN THE VETERINARY BUT ALSO IN CLINICAL MEDICINE. CRYOSURGERY, A CRYOGENIC DESTRUCTION OF DISEASED TISSUES, HAS BEEN AN INNOVATION IN MODERN MEDICINE.
