Summary

CRYOPRESERVATION TECHNIQUES CAN ENSURE THE PRESERVATION OF THE GENETIC CHARACTERISTICS OF A SPECIES FOR A THEORETICALLY UNLIMITED TIME. OIL PALM (ELAEIS GUINEENSIS JACQ) IS VEGETATIVELY PROPAGATED IN VITRO ON A LARGE SCALE USING ADVENTIVE EMBRYOGENESIS. A SIMPLE OIL PALM SOMATIC EMBRYO CRYOPRESERVATION TECHNIQUE HAS BEEN DEVELOPED AND APPLIED TO 25 CLONES. EMBRYOIDS OF 2 CLONES WERE STORED FOR 12 AND 15 MONTHS IN LIQUID NITROGEN, WITHOUT NOTICEABLE CHANGES IN RECOVERY RATE AFTER THAWING. PLANTLETS ORIGINATING FROM 2 CLONES WHICH WERE CRYOPRESERVED ARE NOW GROWING IN FIELD. SO FAR THEIR DEVELOPMENT IS NORMAL.
