Crystal growth of mushy layer in water-ethanol mixture.
Number: pap. O35
Author(s) : KUWAHARA K., OCHIAI J., ITOH R., et al.
Summary
A water-ethanol mixture can exist either as a liquid or solid phase. Because of this property, water ethanol mixtures are becoming considerably important as an environment friendly coolant or a thermal storage material. The crystallization in the mixture occurs in two ways: firstly, equiaxed crystals grow in the mixture and secondly, crystal growth occurs within the mushy layer, which is formed on a refrigerated surface. Here, in order to understand the characteristics of the crystal growth within the mushy layer, the effect of surface temperature on the crystal growth was investigated by varying the concentrations of ethanol and observing the crystal growth in a liquid pool in contact with a refrigerated surface. Five types of mushy layers were observed in the solid-liquid coexisting region of the water ethanol mixture, and further, three types of crystal growth process were indentified: namely, the formation of a dendric layer, a white layer and a transparent layer at various surface temperatures and concentrations of ethanol. Additionally, it was found that mushy layer thickness grew in proportion to the 1/2 power of time in the early stages of crystal growth, for low ethanol concentrations.
