Summary

Formation of frost is the process of the accumulation of cold on the surface of heat exchangers. Modern solutions should take into account the possibility of beneficial use of this phenomenon. According to the authors, this issue involves the possibility of improving the COP of devices. Common solutions of defrost systems do not yet include possibilities of the utilization of accumulated cold, but there are already solutions that make this possible. Air coolers that operate at temperatures below freezing become frosted. This phenomenon is an undesirable side effect of operation of refrigerating systems. To ensure proper operation it is necessary to periodically remove frost. For this purpose, the cooling or heating cycle (depending on the operation mode of the refrigerating appliance / heat pump) have to be stopped and heat provided to defrost. As a result, the effectiveness of the device decreases. In order to reduce the need for user intervention in the operation, modern refrigerating appliances and heat pumps are fitted with automatic defrost systems. These systems are characterized by low energy efficiency. The article discusses the issue of energy consumption to defrost air coolers in refrigerating appliances and heat pumps. The authors indicate the problems connected with defrosting, such as frosting process, operating cycles, heat balance, etc. The different defrosting solutions and their energy efficiency are discussed. The new energy efficient defrosting systems are presented.
