Depletion and variability of the ozone layer.

Type of article: Article

Summary

The ozone layer is in a process of continuous change. At all time scales, and sometimes in fixed geographical patterns, fluctuations occur that are caused by a large number of chemical reactions and atmospheric transport processes. This large natural variability means that, without statistical analyses, it is difficult to determine the average amount by which the ozone layer is getting thinner. The article discusses the results of two analysis techniques that have been used on global satellite measurements in order to gain an insight into this subject.
