Summary

This paper presents a project to develop a R-744 commercial single door bottle cooler that is cost competitive and matches the performance of typical cost optimised R-404A system. A prototype was developed with components easily available on the market; this system consists of a single stage reciprocating hermetic compressor, conventional fin and tube evaporator, wire-on-tube gas cooler and a capillary tube throttling device, externally brazed to the suction line. The energy performance of the CO2 system under steady-state and cyclic operations was investigated and compared with the one of the conventional refrigerants. A methodology to design properly the capillary tube and to optimize the combination of capillary tube and refrigerant charge is also presented. This methodology puts a special focus on the discharge pressure profile versus the theoretical optimum discharge pressure.
