Summary

Insufficiently clean and badly maintained air ducts may have serious effects on the quality of conditioned air. This has been observed in an alarming way, as the intervention on existing air distribution systems often proves difficult or impossible. When designing new plants or rehabilitating air distribution systems, it is essential to fulfill the requirements available in a series of standard projects and international documents, which aim at the correct design and installation of air ducts. The article compiles in an organised way the especially useful elements of technical guidebooks and standards. It also gives suggestions and practical recommendations. The purpose of the second article is to show that indoor air quality problems, such as hygienic maintenance, can be avoided with the help of certain European and Italian documents and standards. Some possible duct-related indoor air quality problems are discussed and practical recommendations are given to help designers, manufacturers, installers and users.
