Design of a continuous ADR for the ESA mission XEUS based on the ESA engineering model ADR.

Author(s) : BARTLETT J., HEPBURN I.

Summary

A preliminary investigation into the design of a continuous adiabatic demagnetisation refrigerator (ADR) for the (ESA) XEUS mission capable of cooling to 50 mK is discussed. It is based on running two or more engineering model (EM) ESA ADRs in a tandem configuration which are currently under development at the Mullard Space Science Laboratory (MSSL) in association with EADS Astrium. Results from mathematical thermal models based on the ESA ADR provide estimations on how the ADR can be reduced in size and what thermal stability will be provided for the detector stage in a continuous system. The initial results of the investigation into the use of a Magnetoresistive heat switch currently under development at MSSL are also presented.
