Summary

This paper outlines the design principles and calculated accuracies of an ammonia test rig that is being built to measure the internal heat transfer coefficient of ammonia boiling in plain horizontal tubes. It will be capable of measuring low heat fluxes 1.5-2.5 kW/m2 with mass fluxes ranging from 15-80 kg/m2s. The test rig has a second test section that is designed for measuring pressure drop in 180° return bends. This part of the test rig also allows for flow visualisation of boiling ammonia.
