Design of cold circulators and compressors for cryogenic applications.

Summary

A method for designing helium cold circulators and compressors according PBS is described and the relevant basic design features are presented. The flow parts (wheel, vaned diffuser and volutes) were aerodynamically optimized with the commercial flow solver Fluent. In particular a design study was done for the labyrinth seal located on the circulators shrouded wheel. The influence of surface roughness in the flow parts related to circulator efficiency was investigated. Universal characteristics computed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software are presented. Hybrid ball bearings are used in the drives. An overview of existing applications from Linde Kryotechnik AG is shown.
