Summary
The design of cryogenic turbines is adapted for operation at very low temperatures. But during the start-up, the turbine has to face to significantly different operational conditions than in design modes. Commonly, the cryogenic facility equipped with a turbine is starting with ambient temperatures of the working gas, so in fact, the turbine starts to work in an off-design mode. While the system is cooling down the operating conditions for the turbine are continuously changing and slowly get closer to the design point. The requirement to ensure safe operation during the cool-down process, often together with a wide range of specified operating conditions brings substantial demands for turbine design. The most critical parts are mainly the rotor, bearing and braking system. Usually, there is necessary to consider this fact already during the design of the turbine stage. 1D and 3D CFD analyses of turbine efficiency, cooling power, thrust bearing loading for different operational modes and during start-up procedure were performed and some results are presented and compared. To ensure the wide operational capabilities, the optimization of eddy current brake for turbines up to ca 7 kW cooling power was performed. Some results of analyses including electromagnetic parameters, mechanical properties and heat exchange in the brake are presented.
