Design optimisation and evaluation methodology of vertical multi-deck open display cabinets.

Author(s) : MAKI A., TASSOU S. A.

Summary

The performance of display cabinets involves complex interactions between the refrigeration system in the cabinet, the circulating air, the product, the insulated enclosure and the surrounding microclimate. This paper presents the development of a model-based design methodology for refrigerated display cabinets to facilitate the design and evaluation of alternative designs of stand-alone (integral) cabinets. The performance of the various subsystems has been investigated and linked to determine the overall performance for display cabinets based on product quality and shelf life, energy consumption and their environmental impact. The refrigeration system model is based on the thermophysical properties and geometric characteristics of the components and allows the investigation of the impact of different heat exchanger designs on system performance. The cabinet model which is linked to the refrigeration system model through the evaporator coil, considers the air flow and heat and mass transfer exchanges between the products and the refrigerated space, and between the refrigerated space and the surrounding environment. The air flow in the cabinet and the interactions with the external environment through the air curtain are modelled using simplified computational fluid dynamics techniques. The environmental impact analysis was considered and is based on the derivation of a single index using the Ecoindicator method. The paper presents in detail the design methodology and some preliminary results.
