Computation of three-dimensional flow field and heat transfer inside an open refrigerated display case with an air curtain.

Summary

Three-Dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling is effectively coupled with the experimental techniques to study the flow field characteristics, product temperatures, heat transfer and discharge air curtain from an open refrigerated display case. The air curtains are intended to reduce the ambient air infiltration into the refrigerated cabinet. The infiltration mixing contributes to both the "sensible load" and the "latent load" on the display case. The ambient infiltration load is about 75% of the total refrigeration load. Ambient radiation increases the product temperatures. The "radiant load" is about 10% of the total refrigerated load. For validation of the three-dimensional CFD simulations based on the solution of Navier-Stokes equations in conjunction with a two-equation kappa-epsilon turbulence model and a discrete, ordinate radiation model, the CFD data was compared with the experimental data at three different air mass flow rates-90, 100 and 110 cubic feet per minute per one foot section of the display case. The CFD results are in reasonable agreement with the experimental results.
