Summary

Packaging forms an integral part of the product, package, storage environment existing in refrigerated applications. A design tool for improved design of horticultural packaging, consisting of a computer-based system capable of handling a wide variety of package and product types and formulated using innovative mathematical modelling technologies, has been developed by staff at Food Science Australia and in collaboration with staff at Massey University in New Zealand. These technologies allow packaging companies and fresh produce industries alike to assess the impacts of both design and operation parameters on a number of quality attributes. Past, current and future research, and application directions in this area are covered.
