WHEN HOT GAS DEFROST IS APPLIED TO AN EVAPORATOR, THE PRESSURE THROUGH THE EVAPORATOR RISES TO A CONDENSING PRESSURE AND THE THERMOSTATIC EXPANSION VALVE (TEV) PHIAL TEMPERATURE RISES TO THE HOT GAS TEMPERATURE. ON THE RESUMPTION OF NORMAL REFRIGERATION, THERE IS A SUDDEN REDUCTION IN PRESSURE IN THE EVAPORATOR WHILE, FOR A TIME, THE PHIAL TEMPERATURE REMAINS HIGH. THE PRESSURE DIFFERENCE OVER THE TEV DIAPHRAGM THEREFORE CHANGES DRAMATICALLY CAUSING ADDITIONAL STRESS. THE AUTHOR EXPLAINS HOW THE DIAPHRAGM CAN BE MECHANICALLY RESTRAINED TO REDUCE THE STRESS OF ADDITIONAL FLEXING. D.W.H.
