INDUSTRIAL REFRIGERATION: FROST REMOVAL.

Author(s) : STAMM R. H.

Type of article: Article

Summary

THE ARTICLE DESCRIBES MOST OF THE VARIOUS METHODS USED TO DEFROST AIR-COOLING EVAPORATORS. WATER DEFROSTING IS DISLIKED BECAUSE OF THE PROBLEMS CAUSED BY WATER CARRYOVER OR SPLASH ONTO FANS, ETC. GLYCOL OR BRINE SPRAYS ARE DISCOUNTED ON THE POINTS OF CORROSION AND COST. ELECTRIC DEFROSTING IS PRACTICAL FOR SINGLE EVAPORATORS, BUT IT SHOULD BE REMEMBERED THAT THE ELECTRICAL RATING REQUIRED IS OFTEN HIGHER THAN THAT OF THE COMPRESSOR MOTOR AND THE COST IS CONSIDERABLE. HOT-GAS DEFROSTING IS PREFERRED AS ENERGY EFFICIENT. THE AUTHOR EXPLAINS HOW IT IS BEST APPLIED TO LIQUID PUMP CIRCULATION, FLOODED AND DIRECT EXPANSION EVAPORATORS. HE POINTS OUT THE DESIRABILITY OF DOWNWARD FLOW IN EVAPORATOR TUBING. D.W.H.
