Development of a fruit simulator to test controlled atmosphere systems in transport systems.
Number: pap. 190
Author(s) : LAWTON A. R., RHODES C.
Summary
Refrigerated containers are fitted with controlled atmosphere systems to extend the storage life of climacteric fruit such as bananas. Some of the systems are semi passive, which means they rely on the fruit metabolism to consume oxygen and produce carbon dioxide, which makes them difficult to test without using an entire consignment of fruit. One method for simulating fruit respiration is to inject nitrogen and carbon dioxide, however this does not exactly replicate fruit metabolism and produce unrealistic system pressures, which would never occur in the field. This paper documents the development of a catalytic burner system that can operate at extremely low levels of oxygen to simulate the metabolism of the fruit by burning fuel.
