IIR document

Development of an air cycle plant.

Summary

The air cycle is known as a cold gas machine, in which air is used as the ultimate green working medium. The cycle concept can be applied for heating as well as cooling purposes. As part of a European research and development project, an air cycle pilot plant has been designed and constructed. Details of the theories, the design and the construction of the plant are given. A regenerative air to air heat exchanger is one of the main innovative aspects of the plant and is therefore discussed in more detail. Experimental measurements are carried out using this plant. Preliminary experimental results are presented and compared to theoretical results.
