Summary

When designing displacement-type monohull high speed vessels, it is difficult to achieve a hull form with a minimum wave-making resistance, because the stern shape is restricted by the arrangement of propulsive machinery and shafts. Small and light-weight propulsive machinery would allow hull form design. A superconducting electric propulsion system, composed for superconducting propulsion motors and generators would appear to be an ideal system for future vessels. A 480 kilowatt superconducting direct current homopolar laboratory test motor was constructed.
