Dispersion of ammonia from safety relief valves.

Summary

Release of anhydrous ammonia from safety relief valves is of concern for emergency planning and response. This concern can lead to poor-quality technical solutions imposed by uninformed officials. The paper discusses the dispersion of refrigerant jets from relief stacks, illustrating trends with an analytically-solvable model. Proper design of the relief system can eliminate the need for complex treatment devices in most cases. Approaches and charts for the design of atmospheric relief systems are presented.
